The Manayunk Arts Festival transforms Main Street into precisely the sort of spectacle that rewards a red dress and an early arrival, artisans and easels crowding a towpath better known for canal views than canvases. Between the stalls I found time for coffee at one of Manayunk's cafes overlooking the Schuylkill, confirming its reputation as one of the best things to do in Philadelphia for a lively summer weekend.
A quieter Manayunk visit found me tracing the old canal towpath, that placid ribbon of water once essential to Philadelphia's industry and now given over entirely to strollers and ducks, before wandering into a PHS pop-up garden, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's seasonal gift to the neighborhood. It is a fine, underrated itinerary for a Philadelphia day trip: equal parts nature walk and unplanned floral education.
