Plymouth Rock is, by any honest account, a rather small stone to bear the weight of an entire national mythology, yet one cannot stand before it without a certain reverence for steadfast endurance. I brought along Sense and Sensibility for the occasion, a novel that name-drops Plymouth more than once, and which felt like the only proper reading material for a history-minded day trip to Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Between the waterfront and Mayflower II, it remains one of the more quietly moving stops on any Massachusetts coastal itinerary.
